Foodlink: Healthy Eating for Busy Lives

Healthy eating doesn't have to be complicated, and a few simple, guilt-free strategies can help anyone make nutritious choices that fit into a busy lifestyle.

That was the message Jill Chodak, a registered dietitian and director of Food-Based Healthcare at Foodlink, shared during "Balanced Plate in a Pinch," an MCH speaker series presentation for staff.

"I find that if you think about these types of things, it really helps to ground you in what you want to maintain," Chodak said.

She encouraged staff to focus on the basics, including staying hydrated, eating more fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and incorporating movement throughout the day.

Rather than striving for moderation, Chodak recommended aiming for balance by pairing foods you enjoy with foods your body needs to feel satisfied. She also encouraged attendees to replace self-criticism with problem-solving. For example, instead of feeling guilty about not having time to pack a healthy lunch in the morning, identify the obstacle, such as a lack of sleep or time, and make small, realistic changes to address it.

Creating healthy habits can also be enjoyable, she said, whether it's preparing nutritious meals with family or friends or making one or two manageable changes over time.

MCH thanks Chodak and Foodlink for sharing practical tools to help staff make informed choices that support their health and well-being. A copy of her presentation is below.
