Orchestra Creates Evening of Harmony

The Rochester Medical Orchestra brought an evening of classical music and community to Monroe Community Hospital, performing for approximately 200 residents, staff and fans in the MCH Auditorium.
Nearly 40 musicians filled the auditorium on Friday, Aug. 14 as the volunteer ensemble shared its love of music and works by Maria Teresa Agnesi, W.A. Mozart, Gordon Jacob and F.J. Hayden.
“We want to thank our wonderful venue and Mary, our incredible representative from Monroe Community Hospital,” said Isabella Cantor, a medical student and director of the orchestra. “Thank you to all of you for welcoming us to your space. You are such wonderful fans of us.”
Founded in 2007 by family medicine physician and clarinetist Dr. Stephen Lurie, the Rochester Medical Orchestra was created as an ensemble for musically inclined physicians, scientists and medical professionals in the Rochester area. After nearly a decade of rehearsals and performances, the orchestra held its final concert in 2016.
Following an unsuccessful revival in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cantor approached Lurie in October 2024 about restarting the group. Since then, the orchestra has doubled its musician base and performed multiple concerts. Smaller ensembles have also performed at conferences, patient support groups and a prom for patients at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
The group is next scheduled to perform at MCH on December 11.
