Innovative Training Space Opens

A state-of-the-art renovation has transformed the sixth floor of the Faith Building into a modern training facility for MCH’s Nurse Aide Training Program, launched last year to help individuals interested in becoming Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) kick-start their careers.

The six-week training program offers students paid training, group activities, and real-life learning experiences led by seasoned instructors hand-picked by MCH. These instructors help hundreds of students annually earn their CNA certification in a modern, well-equipped training space.

MCH held a ribbon-cutting with County Executive Adam Bello, MCH administrators, staff and MCH’s Facilities Department, which made the renovation successful. The upgraded space has multiple instructional spaces, along with office, meeting, and storage areas.

“This new space is a tremendous resource for our Nurse Aide Training Program, and I’m grateful to everyone at MCH who played a role in completing the renovations,” said County Executive Adam Bello. “Certified Nursing Assistants are the heart of compassionate, empathetic patient care. They provide a vital link between patients and the healthcare team and are often the most consistent point of contact for those who come to us for treatment and healing. We are proud of MCH’s leadership in training the next generation of CNAs in our community.” The non-traditional learning space will help bolster MCH's plans to develop and retain its pool of CNAs by providing access to labs, classrooms as well as study and learning spaces for its Nurse Aide Training Program.

“We sincerely thank County Executive Bello for joining us in launching a new, innovative and non-traditional learning space in support of our Nurse Aide Training Program to train and add certified nursing assistants at MCH and the greater Rochester Community,” said Alyssa Tallo, Executive Health Director at MCH. “This space is just one of several supports and benefits, which includes paid training, to nurture and develop qualified CNAs for our community. Many of our trainees are hired by MCH immediately after they graduate from our Nurse Aide Training Program.”

A key feature of the renovation included the transformation of the approximately 2,100-square-foot space into a new multipurpose area that will be used by the Nurse Aide Training Program, among others. The space was updated with natural wood finishes, Earth tones, new furniture and other amenities.

Originally dedicated in 2000 to Dr. T. Franklin Williams, the space now has a more open feel due to a new ceiling design that brings in more natural light while highlighting the panoramic views of the Rochester area and the Erie Canal.

“People are going to be really excited when they see this space,” said Rob Cammilleri, Director of Facilities and Grounds at MCH. “It’s one of the prettiest areas in the whole building. It’s a space that will be used by many people.”

The updated space includes a new kitchen, updated countertops and cabinets, and can host family and staff events, as well as serve as a space for demonstrating cooking techniques, in addition to serving the Nurse Aide Training Program. New lighting, flooring, furniture, and improvements to fire control systems were also installed.

All of the work, including carpentry, electrical, flooring, masonry, mechanical, and painting, was completed by a team of about 10 MCH employees. The recently completed work also included new classrooms with upgraded equipment to simulate real-world conditions for those in the Nurse Aide Training Program.

“We’re proud of what we’ve done here,” Cammilleri said. “These projects are going to have a huge impact and will be used by many people.”
