Special Day Proclaimed for MCH Resident

Monroe County and MCH celebrate centenarian and WWII veteran Joe Vazzana.

MCH Resident and World War II veteran Joseph “Joe” Vazzana was honored with his very own day in Monroe County, as County Executive Adam Bello proclaimed October 29 “Joseph Vazzana Day.”

Surrounded by more than 160 attendees, Bello praised the 100-year-old veteran — soon to be 101— for his courage, humor, and lifelong service. The ceremony was filled with warmth and applause as family, staff, and community members celebrated Vazzana’s remarkable journey and enduring spirit.

Drafted into the U.S. Army at age 19, Vazzana served as a scout and mechanic in Europe before being captured and held as a prisoner of war for more than a year. He survived against the odds, returned home to build a family and career, and continues to inspire those around him with his humility and resilience.
