Monroe Community Hospital (MCH) participated in the county’s inaugural Mentoring Day in October to provide students with disabilities a glimpse into health care careers while celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
Organized by Monroe County’s Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the event gave high school students a hands-on look on October 23 at the diverse roles at MCH, showcasing potential career opportunities as they prepare to enter the workforce.
“Mentoring Day is about more than just showing students MCH — it’s about inspiring them, celebrating their abilities, and providing a first-hand view of how they can contribute to the health care industry,” said Alyssa Tallo, Executive Health Director. “Hearing students say they were in awe of MCH shows how meaningful Mentoring Day can be in opening doors and encouraging students to explore their potential in health care."
The day highlighted the vital role MCH plays in the community while fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce.
Activities included a visit with MCH’s leadership team, an overview of the hospital’s history, and a first-hand look into a wide range of departments and programs, including resident programs, nursing, food services, laundry, facilities, rehabilitation, and more.
Overall, the county hosted 65 students with disabilities for Mentoring Day, with stops at Seneca Park Zoo and key county services, including MCH, the Department of Human Services, the Probation Office, Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, and more.
