Monroe Community Hospital, one of New York state’s largest long-term skilled nursing providers, recently had 30 employees become certified in the Positive Approach to Care program, developed by renowned dementia care expert Teepa Snow.

Supported by a New York State Advanced Training Initiative grant, the six-hour intensive training focused on practical techniques to enhance caregiving for people living with dementia while reinforcing MCH’s commitment to personalized, person-centered care.

The Positive Approach to Care program emphasizes effective methods for staff to better understand and communicate with people living with dementia. Through hands-on demonstrations and guided practice grounded in research, MCH employees learned to recognize individual abilities to strengthen care, reduce stress and promote dignity and quality of life.

The training complements the opening of Friendship Place at MCH, a secure, 25-bed memory care unit that opened in September and reflects MCH’s ongoing commitment to meet the needs of the community.

The dementia care program is part of MCH’s ongoing employee education and professional development efforts, which include guest speakers, annual hands-on and virtual training, and an award-winning Simulation Center. The center provides staff with lifelike opportunities to enhance their skills and deliver high-quality, person-centered care.
