Shawna Rizzi has joined Monroe Community Hospital as Lead Clinical Instructor to oversee operations of the organization’s Simulation Center, advancing its commitment to hands-on, high-quality staff education and training.

Rizzi brings 20 years of experience in emergency medical services, including 18 years with Brighton Ambulance, where she spent a decade as Assistant Chief overseeing staff training. In that role, she led the development and delivery of educational programming designed to prepare first responders for complex, real-world scenarios.

“Shawna brings an exceptional blend of frontline experience and training expertise that will elevate how we prepare our staff,” said Alyssa Tallo, Executive Health Director. “Her ability to design realistic, engaging training will strengthen clinical skills, build confidence and ultimately enhance the quality of care we provide every day.”

She also brings a unique perspective from her work with a national sports medicine company, where she travels across the country conducting simulation-based training for professional sports organizations, including teams in the NFL, NBA, WNBA and Major League Baseball.

At MCH, Rizzi will coordinate all aspects of the simulation center, including the development of engaging, interactive scenarios and training that build confidence and competence among staff.

“I want to develop training that people look forward to,” Rizzi said. “By creating realistic, hands-on scenarios, we can help staff feel prepared and supported so they can provide the best possible care to our residents.”

Opened in 2024, the simulation center was made possible by an $878,000 grant from the New York State Increasing Training Capacity program and support from Monroe County.

The center features two adult mannequins and one infant mannequin, allowing staff to practice real-life scenarios involving resident care, infection control and enhanced barrier precautions. Teams also have a space where they can review recorded sessions and discuss performance improvements.

Rizzi holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications from Buffalo State University. She is married with two children and frequently cheers them on at area hockey rinks. She also enjoys crafting stained glass projects and is an avid reader.
