BOCES Students Explore MCH Careers

Students from Monroe No. 1 BOCES visited Monroe Community Hospital (MCH) for an inside look at entry-level employment opportunities and the day-to-day operations of a skilled nursing facility.

"We aren't just showing them a building; we are showing them a way to move forward and to build a life with a team that cares," said John Lightfoot, who guided the group on the tour. "I am very grateful to be a part of this MCH family."

The visit introduced students to a wide range of careers available at MCH, along with expectations for employees, the application and interview process, and the foundational skills and qualifications needed to succeed in a health care environment.

The goal was to expose students to a realistic pathway into the workforce while highlighting roles that support resident care. Students visited the Simulation Center, where they experienced how lifelike mannequins used to train staff can communicate and simulate a pulse.

They also toured laundry, facilities, food and nutrition, security and nursing for a firsthand look at the roles involved in operating a large skilled nursing facility. Throughout the tour, staff emphasized that MCH offers entry-level positions as well as opportunities for growth and advancement.

Students also gained insight into what employers look for in candidates, including professionalism, communication skills, dependability and a willingness to learn.
